by 826th and 852nd Engineer Battalions of the US Army. 03/44 to
07/45, 8th Air Force Special Operations Group, 801st Bombardment Group
(Provisional) with B-24 Liberators,
A-26, C-47 and Mosquito XVI flying
'Carpetbagger' missions supplying arms, equipment and agents, 'Joe's,
to occupied Europe, 21 night bombing missions. Bomb Squadrons based here: 36th, 406th, 788th, 467th and 850th, - 08/44, redesignated 856th, 858th, 859th and 857th Bomb Squadrons. Lost 25 B-24's and 1 A-26 in action.
08/44, 492nd BG from North
Pickenham, after the heaviest loss rate of all the B-24 Liberator
Bomb Groups this unit was disbanded and its Squadron numbers transferred
to the 801st BG (H).
