In 2002 the Tower is just a bare shell almost lost in the trees, entry is restricted by locked gates

Most buildings have gone, one T2 hangar remains in use on industrial estate, water tower survives to south of airfield, all runways and perimeter tracks remain

Originally built as an RAF Bomber Station in No.7 Group.

08/43 to 05/45 Allocated to 9th USAAF Troop Carrier Command HQ, used by 1st Tactical Air Depot (29th, 33rd and 85th Air Depot Groups) preparing C-47's for operations, major servicing, repairs and supplies.
03/44, IX Troop Carrier Command Pathfinder School established to train the leading airborne invasion forces. 20 C-47's left North Witham 2200hrs 05/06/44, landing 200 troops in Normandy 1220hrs on D-Day to guide in the main paratroop forces.
Renamed IX Troop Carrier Pathfinder Group (Provisional), moving to Chalgrove 09/44.
09/44, IX TCC transferred to Ninth Air Force becoming IX Troop Carrier Service Wing (Provisional).
Stationtransferred to RAF Maintenance Command. 06/45 to 06/46, No. 259 Maintenance Unit aircraft spares depot.
No. 100 MU, N0.40 Group, used the runways for bomb storage until 1948.
09/45, No.4 Personnel and Despatch Unit for RAF Regiment demob.
Airfield then placed on Care and Maintenance and inactive by 1956, sold off 02/60. Forestry Commission then extended Twyford Wood to cover the airfield site.
