I think this was a unique type built post-war, maybe when the runways were rebuilt in 1952. I don't know what was used for air traffic control before this was built.

History:
07/1930, Opened as a grass aerodrome for Handley Page civil aircraft. Airfield extended in 1939 and used for production of Hampden and Halifax bombers. Post-war used for production of Hasting and Hermes airliners. Society of British Aircraft Constructors held airshows here in 1947 and 1948. Victor bomber prototype built here, runways extended in 1952 to allow flight testing. Later, Victors were converted to tankers and reconnaissance versions here.
Handley Page remained independant but after the death of Sir Frederick Handley Page in 1962 were reliant on the the Jetstream.
Company went bankrupt in 1969 and closed in 1970.
