History:
1909, Blackpools first aerodrome was built on Squires Gate Fields south of the town. The first official aviation meeting was held here attracting 200,000 spectators.
1911 to 1914, The site became Clifton Park horse racing course and a large grandstand was built.
1914 to 1918, Site of The King's Lancashire Military Convalescent Hospital.

Flying resumed in the 1920s and a large Air Pagent was staged here in 1928. In 1929 another aerodrome was opened across the road from the new
Stanley Park a few miles away. From 1933 Squires Gate flew regular services to Liverpool and Ronaldsway in the Isle of Man, transferring to Stanley Park in 1936.

09/1939 to 01/1940 No. 63 Squadron Fairey Battles, No. 75 and 215 Squadron Wellingtons were based here.
1940, Ministry of Aircraft Production built a Vickers Wellington shadow factory here and the first three aircraft built flew 30/09/1940. 2,584 Wellingtons were built here before closure 10/1945.
A secondary assembly line was also set up at Stanley Park.
1939 to 1945, Blackpool became the RAF's largest training area along with camps at Weeton and Kirkham.
1949 to 1955, Shadow factory used by Hawker Aircraft to build Hawker Hunter jets.
Post-war the airfield became Blackpool Airport and the shadow factory is part of an industrial estate.
